The cold winter months are often seen as a time to slow down and hibernate (Christmas party season aside!). While some people dread the plummeting temperatures and long, dark nights, others embrace the opportunity to hunker down and get cosy at home.

Winter is far more bearable if you have the right environment to snuggle up in and no one wants to spend months in a home with poor heating or cold, open spaces. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to ensure your home stays cosy all winter long and they don’t have to break the bank either.

Mix up your textures

Cushions, throws and blankets add some instant extra warmth to your home and you can mix up the textures to keep things interesting. Look for cosy, soft textured materials like velvet, fake fur, wool and sheepskin. More is more here; pile cushions and blankets on to sofas, add throws to the bed and warm up floors with wool or sheepskin rugs.

Add some thermal curtains

Thermal curtains are highly energy efficient and they’ll help to trap warm air within your home, as well as preventing cold air from entering. Adding thermal curtains can even help you save money on your energy bills, as they reduce the amount of heat needed to warm the home. Thermal curtains feature a layer of acrylic foam in between two or three layers of fabric and they also help to block unwanted noise from outside.

The right lighting

The right lighting is essential for a cosy glow and harsh, overhead lighting isn’t going to cut it. Consider installing a dimmer switch so you can control how bright your overhead lights are, or forgo them altogether for a series of lamps. For a truly magical feel, switch off the lights and use plenty of candles for a soft, warm glow.

Cosy colours

The right colour palette can go a long way when creating a cosy home, but don’t worry if you’re not a fan of ‘warm’ colours. Traditionally cool colours like blue and green can still look cosy and warm, as long as you choose a deep, rich shade. Offset blues and greens with bronze, copper or gold accessories, or choose paint in natural warm colours like ochre, terracotta and honey.
